alex boye

June 30, 2008  -  News

i had the chance to meet and work with an amazing musician by the name of alex boye this past weekend over at talmage studios. alex came down from holiday, utah after a very last minute invite from mark mabry to record a few songs for the upcoming reflections of Christ cd/soundtrack due out later this year. i have to tell you alex is one of those people you meet that has this contagious personality - he is upbeat - extremely talented - and he has a british accent so it is just fun to hear him go on and on about life in general. below is a production still from the behind the scenes footage we shot as we get ready to add to the reflections of Christ documentary dvd that will also be revamped and released for sale later this year. being able to see how talented people collaborate to create amazing content is an amazing thing in and of itself. lots of good things happening as usual.

alex & anthony - the first four minutes

June 27, 2008  -  Weddings

alex & anthony were married earlier this year at the villa sienna in gilbert. awesome couple - they were extremely eas to work with and their friends and family were amazing as well. easy to feel apart of the family with that group. and the food at the reception was probably the best i've had - without question.

here are the first four minutes of their wedding video. have a great weekend.

i love vimeo because it gives you the ability to watch in hd. its free so go sign up and start loading all your goodness.

last saturday was the official go Skate day 2008 - hopefully you celebrated. i took the day off and decided to go help uncle ron put together the mini ramp. extreme heat advisory all day long. all worth it for the mini.

whats in my bag

June 18, 2008  -  Personal

i have received lots and lots of emails over the past few months from lurkers and amigos asking lots of tech questions about the gear i use to shoot and edit with. so rather than writing the same thing over and over i thought it would be cool to just do a few blog posts to answer the questions. i love it when others do this on their blogs, i always seem to get some little nugget of useful information from it - hopefully this does the same for you.

first up i'll answer the "what do you shoot with" question.

numero uno is the camera that really changed the way i shoot about 3 years ago . . . the Panasonic HVX200. great camera - really great camera. true hi definition wide screen DVCPROHD recording on p2 cards, variable frame rates, and 8 channel audio recording. its as close to a true film style workflow out there in a digi cam. i've owned mine since the day they were released three years ago and have never looked back. only true downside to this camera is archiving terabytes of footage on lots of hard drives.

numero dos is the Sony V1U. when i first started shooting 8 years ago i started on the VX2000 so this camera was a natural fit when i made the jump to hi definition. i love the image that comes off the Pani a lot more but i needed a tape based camera in the HI Def range for longer shoots so i went with this bad boy. it's a great camera that just feels right in your hands and produces a very sharp image in 1080i 30p mode.

numero tres is the Sony HC3 (no longer available but the HC9 is the upgrade). i kid you not this camera is like my third kid. i adopted it into the family about 2 years ago on a shoot when a battery went bad on the V1u at a very big wedding i was shooting by myself ( i will never do that again). i had this little animal parked on a tripod at the side of the ceremony and couldn't believe the images it managed to grab ( which saved my trash). this camera has traveled to 6 different countries (most without me) and been the eye for three solid Trejo family dvd's so far. it is the camera that will never die . . . . even though it has gone through just about everything you can imagine. i use this puppy as my deck - backup camera - family camera - and test the waters camera (literally the water). if i had to do it all over again on the small camera side i would have probably gone with the Canon HV30.

i get lots of people who call and say they want to shoot their families or events or their own short films in hi definition but they aren't sure which camera to go with. my suggestion is if you aren't looking to do this full time but want something that is going to give you a great look - go with the Canon HV30. 24P - 1080 recording for under $900.

as always feel free to email me or comment with any questions or suggestions on other gear you'd like to see.
